Newcomen, British Inventor

In 1712, British inventor Thomas Newcomen created the first functioning atmospheric steam engine. His invention was crucial for pumping water out of mines, especially in Great Britain. Despite later improvements by James Watt, Newcomen’s machine formed the basis for the Industrial Revolution and the subsequent development of steam power.
